About the Rejoin Campaign

My name is John McPhie. I am the founder of the Rejoin Campaign.
Brexit died the moment it collided with economic reality. We're now living with the consequences of this madcap, massively disruptive project which has defied just about every element of economic and political sense. After five years, the consequences of Brexit have been brought into sharp focus. The reality is that Brexit is an economic and social catastrophe of enormous proportions. Britain and its people have been hit hard by its effects, and will continue to suffer them until Brexit is undone.
Despite the devastating consequences of Brexit and the immediate and very real threats we now face, the new Labour government appears to be intent on continuing with Johnson's hard Brexit. It's also doggedly refusing to rejoin the Single Market and the Customs Union, the one thing that would put the brakes on our decline, bring an end the countless Brexit embuggerances, reduce the cost of living, end border chaos and red tape, and allow growth and investment to happen.
It won't have escaped the new government's attention (but maybe it has!) that mood in the country has changed. Made poorer by Brexit, there is a growing resentment of the devastating effect Brexit is having on people's lives and on their future prospects. The latest polling shows that 64% of the population want to rejoin the European Union and this rises to over 88% for the under 30s. 84% want a new Brexit referendum. These figures are likely to increase as Britain's economic and political situation deteriorates - which it's doing at an alarming rate.
The government isn't paying any attention to what the majority of the British people want. We must demand to heard.
The new Labour government had the opportunity to deliver us out of the Brexit nightmare we're in. It didn't, and it appears it doesn't want to, which is unfathomable, particularly because it's costing £100 billion a year and will be a serious impediment to our ability to deal with the threats we now face. Unless it comes to it's senses, and the new threats demand that they do, it'll be a monumental betrayal of the British people.
With our peace, security and future prosperity under serious threat, and with the Putin / Trump apocalypse becoming all too real, it's perhaps the right time to remind ourselves of the original motivation for bringing European nations together. It's too often forgotten, conveniently forgotten, that it was a determination to end the devastation of war and enmity, and to build a cooperative, peaceful, prosperous future together as a family of nations. Being part of the EU is about much more than trade. Unity is paramount for our future security and prosperity.
Reform is also an important component of our agenda. Our institutions are outdated. We have no written constitution. The British people are excluded from participating in the political process. This is just not right. Reform is long overdue. If we want to get out of the mess we're in, we have to make change happen and that means we have to embrace fundamental reform.
